چکیده
This study investigates the feasibility of electricity production in a solid oxide fuel cell using methane recovered from groundwater as fuel. Methane must be removed for drinking water to, amongst others, avoid bacterial regrowth. Instead releasing to atmosphere or converting it carbon dioxide by flaring, can also vacuum stripping and served However, electrical efficiency currently used combustion-based technologies fuelled with methane-rich gas is limited 35% due low heating value (70 mol. % methane) power derating presence (25 mol.%). We propose use Solid Oxide Fuel Cells are fuel-flexible potentially attain higher efficiencies up 60%. To this end, specific processing, including cleaning reforming, required allow durable operation cell. assessed whether could generated full-scale treatment plant The had concentration 45 mg∙L-1, towers contained 70 mol% methane. reactor impregnated activated remove hydrogen sulfide traces gas. Thermodynamic calculations showed that additional steam achieve high reforming. added content simultaneously contribute reforming prevent deposition. measured open circuit potential corresponded theoretical Nernst voltage, implying achieved density (mixed steam) was 27% less than hydrogen-fuelled Ultimately, 51.2% demand covered replacing engine 915 kW system groundwater, while greenhouse emission reduced 17.6%.

Simulation of a Solid Oxide Fuel Cell with External Steam Methane Reforming and Bypass
Fuel flexibility is a significant advantage of solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) and can be attributed to their high operating temperature. The eligibility of a combined heat and power (CHP) system has been investigated as a new power generation methode, in this study. Natural gas fueled SOFC power systems via methane steam reforming (MSR) yield electrical conversion efficiencies exceeding 50% and...

A two-dimensional CFD model of a planar solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) has been developed. This model can predict the performance of SOFC at various operating and design conditions. The effect of Knudsen diffusion is accounted in the porous electrode (backing) and reaction zonelayers. The mathematical model solves conservation of electrons and ions and conservation ofspecies. The model is formulate...
متن کاملA New Sensitivity Study of Thermal Stress Distribution for a Planar Solid Oxide Fuel Cell
Converting chemical energy into electricity is done by an electro-chemical device known as a fuel cell. Thermal stress is caused at high operating temperature between 700 oC to 1000 oC of SOFC. Thermal stress causes gas escape, structure variability, crack initiation, crack propagation, and cease operation of the SOFC before its lifetime. The aim of this study is to presen...
متن کاملAn octane-fueled solid oxide fuel cell.
There are substantial barriers to the introduction of hydrogen fuel cells for transportation, including the high cost of fuel-cell systems, the current lack of a hydrogen infrastructure, and the relatively low fuel efficiency when using hydrogen produced from hydrocarbons. Here, we describe a solid oxide fuel cell that combines a catalyst layer with a conventional anode, allowing internal refor...
متن کاملIntegrating Multiple Solid Oxide Fuel Cell Modules
Abstract-According to SECA program guidelines, solid oxide fuel cells (SOFC) will be produced in the form of 3–10 kW modules for residential use. In addition to residential use, these modules can also be used in apartment buildings, hospitals, etc., where a higher power rating would be required. For example, a hospital might require a 250 kW power supply. To provide this power using the SOFC mo...
